10 Major Cities That Could Become Unlivable Within 80 Years

With rising temperatures and sea levels, some major cities could experience unbearable living conditions. Scientists suggest that no city will become completely uninhabitable, but they worry that some cities will struggle to support human life. 

Here is a list of the 10 cities that might soon struggle to support human life:

Miami:

It has been predicted that more than 3.3 million Miami residents could get caught in disastrous floods by 2100. It was found in a study that more than 13 million people could potentially be exposed to the sea level rising up to 6 feet high. 

New Orleans:

This city could potentially be underwater. Prone to flooding, it has been predicted that even if the sea levels rise by 3 feet, around one-third of the city’s population would be adversely affected. 

Chicago:

Located in one of America’s severe heat zones, it has been estimated that this city could face a heat wave at any moment. Studies have shown that exposure to a wet-bulb temperature of more than 95 degrees Fahrenheit could be fatal, as the human body can no longer cool itself. Chicago witnessed a fatal heat wave in 1995, which killed around 700 people. 

Dubai:

It has been predicted that Dubai could see temperatures as high as 113 degrees Fahrenheit in the summers after 2070. The wet-bulb temperature could also exceed its threshold, thereby making human existence difficult in Dubai.

Abu Dhabi:

After 2070, the daily temperatures could become unbearable for humans. Known as one of the cities most vulnerable to heat, in just half a century, Abu Dhabi will see higher temperatures more often. The highest temperature recorded so far is 126 degrees Fahrenheit and it is said that by 2070, such high temperatures could be a daily occurence. 

Shanghai: 

The third most populous city in the world could see severely high temperatures between 2070 and 2100. By the end of the century, Shanghai could see the deadliest heat wave on the planet! Researchers predict that there will be 5 instances where the temperature of Shanghai will exceed the fatal threshold. 

Beijing:

Prone to heat waves, this city is one of the major contributors of greenhouse gases, which also causes air pollution. This could make Beijing unlivable in the years to come. Locals are forced to wear masks due to frequent bouts of smog. Around 9 million people died due to pollution-related diseases in 2015. 

Delhi:

Smog-filled air and heat waves: India’s capital city is known for its extreme temperature conditions. According to a 2017 analysis, 2% of the country’s population has been exposed to 90 degrees Fahrenheit of wet-bulb temperatures. By the end of the century, around 70% of the population could be exposed to such high temperatures. 

Dhaka:

Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable nations when it comes to climate change. It is prone to heat waves and floods. With a 3 foot rise in sea levels, the nation could lose around 20% of its landmass. By 2070, Dhaka might not possess enough land for humans to live on.

Lagos:

Due to its low-lying terrain and location on a river-delta, Lagos is susceptible to flooding. In the next 10 years, Lagos could see around 260,000 deaths due to floods. With extreme weather conditions and its susceptibility to floods, it might be difficult for this city to recover from recurrent floods.
